Hello, my name is Lizette
Munoz and I am a sophomore at Indiana University. I am from a small town in
northwest Indiana, Whiting. I am studying secondary education mathematics with
a license addition in English as a New Language (ENL). I completed the Balfour
Pre-College Academy the summer of 2014 and loved it, it helped me assure myself
that Indiana University was the right school for me. I have enjoyed being part
of the program for the various opportunities that they provide for students and
enjoy to see it grow each year. As well as being a Balfour scholar, I am also a
Groups, 21st Century, Hudson and Holland, and Hutton scholar. I also
am a new FASE mentor that helps in providing guidance to first year students on
campus.
As I entered Indiana
University this past year, I quickly realized how sheltered my town was to
various global issues. Many global issues were not talked about and often times
people did not care for them since they felt they were not around our town.
Within the first couple of weeks, I learned so much from the interactions with
my friends and classmates that were not from my home. I think the most
important aspect of globalization, is that just because it might seem far away,
does not mean that it is not close to home in one way or another. Something
that might seem different isn’t exotic and should not been seen as “over there”
but rather should be taken as a learning experience for your own global gain.
This is also something that was discussed with my professor and peers in one of
my linguistics classes that I took this past semester. I have learned so much
about other cultures, languages, and people, which sparked my interest in
adding the ENL license addition to my major.
